Topic
Moving Forward: The State of the Industry

Description
In 2013, the entertainment industry had an amazing year with last year’s box-office receipts totaling a record high $11 billion.  Studios distributed a tremendous number of quality, captivating feature films starring black actors in lead roles, ensemble casts, and historical pieces, and eleven black directors were part of that success as well.  What made 2013 a pivotal year for films starring black actors and those made by black filmmakers?   Does the influx and success of films marketed to and about the African-American community signal a new era of films or is their success just another industry trend such as “race films” or the “blaxploitation” eras?  What does the future hold?
